Having a Bash at Braille

Author Kirsty Armstrong Published on Nov 20, 2011 in Volunteer Program China

It doesn’t seem like I have been here 5 minutes and already it is Friday!  This week has gone by so quickly. I’m almost a week in, with just one more week to go. I really feel settled here now and I think the children are getting used to having me around, which is lovely.  They are recongnising my voice when and in turn I’m beginning to learn some of their names!

At the start of the week I was a little nervous and was just taking everything in that was happening around me but now I feel a lot more confident in approaching the kids for a chat or going for a walk with them in the playground.  I’m also learning more about their individual personalities and characteristics, especially with the older kids.
I spent the morning auditing English classes and then spent the rest of the day continuing working on my invitation design for an upcoming fundraising event the organisation will hold, which is to be a Christmas party!

In the afternoon I took the dog for a walk around the farm, (I don’t think I could ever get bored of the fresh countryside air and beautiful scenery!)  before hanging out with one of the old kids, Christina. She was busy writing Braille and it looked so complicated. Intrigued how it worked I asked if she could teach me a little. I figured it couldn’t be as hard as writing Chinese characters, (which to me is quite baffling) and well…it was! Haha! Once I understood the concept of turning the paper over and having to write back to front, next was the hard part -actually writing. I managed to understand how to write the A, B and C before I was lost. I must praise my teacher she was fantastic and patient, but I definitely have a long way to go before I get to Z!

In the evening I researched ‘Braille for the sighted’ and downloaded a sheet, which shows you how to write each letter or the alphabet – hopefully by the end of next week I will be able to impress Christina by writing my name!
